Ruckin’ With You | 12.20.16 | Work In Progress

Transmitting the last Ruckin’ of the old year. When you really think about it, aren’t we all just a work in progress? We’re never a finished project, that is unless we’re dead. We’re never truly done with our work, because the next work awaits. Even if we’re fortunate enough to gracefully–willfully–retire, what awaits us is the work of getting on and keeping on at actually living, or if the case may be, barely surviving. It’s all work, and if we’re breathing air, it’s work in progress. Head Trip As you might imagine by that intro, I’ve been wandering around inside my head the past week and a half, given my unexpected newfound free time at home. Considering the way my head works it could be argued it’s too much time–time that could lead to mental rampancy because I could literally overthink myself into oblivion (they say that’s kind of a Libra thang). I think the subconscious question echoing in the back of my headspace has been WHY AM I HERE AND WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING? Aside from being a …

Ruckin’ With You | 11.29.16 | The Lone Wolf

It’s a good thing I’m a fairly independent person who is no stranger to the role of lone wolf and self-reliance because I’ve once again been made starkly aware that it’s the only way for me to roll creatively, at least until certain things significantly change. As a musician, inherently I am a very collaborative soul who nowadays finds writing songs alone quite boring and not-quite-so-fulfilling. This past year has proven that I can’t rely on my now always dormant band for a consistent musical outlet. And now recently I’ve been shown that I can’t rely on illustrators to co-create comics. So I may as well couch that particular goal once again and simply get on with writing prose, right? Because . . . Art Fart . . . My recent dalliance with a trio of different artists has proven ultimately fruitless for different reasons unique to each of them. And for two of them there’s one big reason. I’m looking for more of a co-creator partnerships, sharing equal rights to the IP, with the eventual (back-end) …

Ruckin’ With You | 11.18.16 | Ugh!

Late Edition. As I finally file this away for transmission to you on this fine Friday (71 degrees in mid-November), I am a miserable bastard who stayed home from work today due to having received the plague from my teenage daughter. I know how it happened too. It was last Saturday when I was enclosed inside a car with the infected child (Patient Zero — I call her “Outbreak Monkey”) when we all went to lunch that afternoon. That was the day–if not before or immediately after–that the insidious virus leaped from her body to my unsuspecting one. By Tuesday for sure it was gestating, and by Wednesday I was waking up in the morning with a sore throat. By Thursday it was full bore. So here I sit on a Friday cooped up on such a unseasonably nice day. I’m normally quite the iron man, capable of warding off most contagions. But not when you entrap me in a small space like a car with diseased individuals (especially a school-age child). Kids, man. They …

Ruckin’ With You | 10.31.16 | I’m Off . . .

. . . to NaNoWriMo later at 12:01 AM. Hello. Figured I’d better fire off what might be the last Ruckin’ missive for a few weeks. As I finally embark on the NaNo endeavor I’m going to make the best attempt at radio silence that I can because I’m like our family dog who is easily distracted by squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, frogs and all other manner of lively distractions. Will be doing what I call a writing monk’s existence. No TV (with perhaps one exception — TWD). No social media (except before bed and upon waking), no reading comics; MAYBE only read prose, no guitars, no videogamses, no nothing really. Sounds like punishment, but I’m not so good with the kind of self-discipline required for someone trying to get a significant portion of a novel written in any given span of time. Thus, drastic measures are in order. #Write-Or-Flight Blocked Shot Received a submission rejection sometime last week. It’s the first rejection I’ve received in a long time. Also the first submission I’d made in a year …

Ruckin’ With You | 10.16.16 | I Am Returned

Family vacation is over. A good time was had. But it’s over and today I deal with the looming return to work on a gloomy overcast day with some rain after a week of blue skies and sunshine. Woe is me, right? At any rate, overall we enjoyed our time in the mid-North states of Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio. On My Mind I arrived home with a great deal on my mind in terms of stories and writing. It seems my intense focus on the launch of my Library of Works website, RUCKERPEDIA, has got me so immersed in my past work that it’s served to inspire me on to current and future work. This past year the concept of a writer’s body of work, particularly MY body of work, has been very intriguing to me. Heck, it’s a huge reason why I built the RUCKERPEDIA website – inherently as an archive it serves as a virtual monument to my more than two decades as a writer. Essentially, were I to meet an untimely demise, …

Ruckin’ With You | 10.9.16 | Library’s Open!

I’d really like to be ruckin’ with y’all proper today, however, I’m not going to be able to because… I’m on vacation!!! Out of town with the fam this week, on a multi-stop adventure which commenced this morning with a 6-hour drive. I sure hope to get a lot of backlogged reading done during the down time of this week. Perhaps some plotting during the quiet hours in the hotel room. I will say this though: this past week I was pretty much obsessed with launching my new website: RUCKERPEDIA I hope you’ll all check out, and Like, and add it to your WP Reader, or FOLLOW to be notified of updates. RUCKERPEDIA, which has been in the works for a while, is my online Library of Works site which is home to my various creative works like a variety of forms of fiction, poetry and lyrics. Currently stocked with about 15 pieces, with another 5 on deck and at least a total of 25 works to be uploaded this month alone. I’d say by year’s end, if all …

Ruckin’ With You | 10.2.16 | Autumn Descends

According to the calendar it’s officially been autumn for over a week now, and this past week the weather has reacted accordingly with milder days and cooler nights. Born in late September, I am effectively a child of the Fall. And I’ve always had a strained relationship with the final full season of the calendar year. Sunshine dependent as I am, I’ve never been a fan of darker days and since I abhor the colder climes, autumn’s role as the harbinger of the Midwestern frigidity to come is a big part of my reluctant embrace of the season wholeheartedly. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that think autumn is arguably the most beautiful season in many ways. The colors of the leaves display an astonishing vibrancy that ironically belies the fact that they’re dying. I’ve used this observation in a few pieces of short fiction of mine over the years, a couple of which I know will be up on the Ruckerpedia dot com site I’ve been tirelessly working on the better part …

Ruckin’ With You | 9.25.16 | On a Pre-Birthday Sunday

Late edition for the previous week. Smartly I launched this birthday weekend/weekbegin with a 4-day weekend off from work to commemorate my latest trip ‘round the sun. Before officially being another year older I decided to finally finish constructing the companion website to this one. The site is called RUCKERPEDIA. Long-term readers here may recall that as the former moniker of the blogsite you’re currently reading (succeeded by RUCKOLOGY and finally, Rucker | Writer). So what the heck is RUCKERPEDIA, you might ask? Essentially it is the site that will serve as my official online archive of fiction (of various formats and genres), poetry and lyrics. You could think of it like an online zine, but dedicated exclusively to my many various works. For posterior, if nothing else. It will also be a place to host some all-new writing that doesn’t quite belong elsewhere. I’m currently tweaking the layout now and then will begin to stock it with pieces over the next week. With any luck it will be primed and ready to launch upon an …

Ruckin’ With You | 9.16.16 | I Am Healed

Last Friday I launched my weekend with an injury while horsing around with one of my kids. My social media announcements about it went like this: “Soooo guess which genius injured his shoulder while lifting his full grown teenager into the air the other night? Got worse last night. Could be serious (never had surgery, not anticipating starting either). My research lists 4 possible injuries of varying degrees. Info was nice to point out that folks over 40 are more susceptible. Lovely. Father Time is a bastard. At any rate, I’ll likely need an MRI. Smh. “INJURY UPDATE: Well, I’m proud to say I managed to wipe my own ass. It wasn’t easy, but, hey, if you can maintain dignity while injured, that’s half the battle. #pride #winning #wellkinda “ON THE MEND: So apparently my mutant healing factor has somehow managed to make that shoulder injury over the weekend only be a sprain, and not the torn ligament I had feared (man, that pain tho). 4 days later it’s now at about 90-95% with pretty …
