January 2017 | New Comics Week 4 — Saga #42 (Image Comics) I cannot honestly remember the last time a comic book made me tearful. The all-black back pages, easily six of them, really helped deliver the gut punch and the kick to the heart. I literally gasped “Really, Brian and Fiona!?!?” BKV may be the best in the biz with his issue-to-issue cliffhangers and even bigger story arc cliffhangers. But he also does not do cheap stunts/deaths/fakeouts. He always delivers on your emotional investment. Knowing that makes this issue burn intensely. Story: Brian K. Since I’m late doing my “best of list” from 2013, you all should know by now why the following names and titles show up here, so I won’t belabor with my own personal gushing this time. This is more “at-a-glance” and for comparison and archival purposes. There are more cover artists than interior artists, so this is always a hard list to pull from, and there’s always someone you forget to mention. These top my list. 1.
