SAGA #51: Middle-Aged, Poised and Graceful

At just past the would-be half-way mark of what’s speculated to likely be a 100-issue epic creator-owned series, SAGA is that comfortable, reliable favorite series that you come to simply expect to deliver exactly what you need from a series — not unlike a favorite TV showing deliver the goods each and every week of the season. That’s exactly what I experienced reading Chapter Fifty One. Saga’s vast cast of characters never fail to be compelling from scene to scene, issue to issue. The plots never meander and rarely fail to surprise and thrill. A relatively “quiet” issue, this one opens with Squire and his father Prince Robot discussing the suspiciously missing Princess Robot. Longtime readers know the truth behind that story. Next we find young Hazel in the ocean, not-quite being babysat by Ghüs, Friendo and Doff. A “mustached kingfish” leads photojournalist Doff off to this chapter’s climax at the end, but not before we discover Hazel’s dad Marko writing a novella that gets lovingly criticized (not too harshly) by his wife and Hazel’s …

Comic Book Fetish Fave of the Week #4

January 2017 | New Comics Week 4 — Saga #42 (Image Comics) I cannot honestly remember the last time a comic book made me tearful. The all-black back pages, easily six of them, really helped deliver the gut punch and the kick to the heart. I literally gasped “Really, Brian and Fiona!?!?” BKV may be the best in the biz with his issue-to-issue cliffhangers and even bigger story arc cliffhangers. But he also does not do cheap stunts/deaths/fakeouts. He always delivers on your emotional investment. Knowing that makes this issue burn intensely. Story: Brian K. The Haul, Y’all – 4/8/2015

9 books plus bags n’ boards for them, about $35 bucks. Almost all Image Comics, which is no surprise for me. A few notes:  I’m so behind on reading Grant Morrison’s The Multiversity. I’ll have to devote a weekend to it sometime soon.  Birthright and Copperhead are both starting their second arcs. I’ve heard great things about Red One, and I’m stoked to close out the harrowing “Gridiron” arc in Southern Bastards. Descender started out strong last month. I still need to read  Secret Identities (I’ve only read a 5-page preview so far). And finally, this might be my last issue of Rat Queens I’m sad to say. My last few trips to the LCS have left me a bit bummed because there are so many other books I’d love to be collecting, but for all the usual reasons it’s just not a possibility. Boom! Studios, Dark Horse Comics, Black Mask and others have been making really solid plays in the indie/creator-owned game that’s dominated by Image Comics. For the discerning comic book fan who largely doesn’t …
